This week, I chose to listen to the song "Paper Doll" by the Mills Brothers. It's quite an interesting song, but I like the soothing feel to it. (Almost as if it's crooning...) But about one minute into the song, it becomes more upbeat and exciting. It has a fun feeling to it. But I can't help but be a tiny bit concerned about the lyrics. It's kind of funny, though. I'm not sure if those lyrics were perceived as "weird" like they are now. There's one part of the song that is especially weird, here it is:
"I guess I had a million dolls or more,
I guess I've played the doll game o'er and o'er,
I just quarrelled with Sue, that's why I'm blue,
She's gone away and left me just like all dolls do..."
I don't get this, and it's creepy in a way... At least in my way of interpreting it. Haha. But as I said before, I do like the feel to the song itself, not necessarily the lyrics. Haha! I'm also curious as to what The Mills Brothers process was in making this song, as well as their intention. I feel like the intention could be self-explanatory, but I also do think that there could be a hidden meaning.
I also think that the lyrics are pretty interesting, and do not make a ton of sense, but I think that interesting lyrics are pretty popular for many of the songs for this time period. Once the song gets more upbeat and faster, you can tell that the singers are having a fun time with the song , which is something that I think was more important to them rather than what they were actually saying in the song.
