This week, I chose to listen to and analyze the song Mambo No. 5. It was both written and performed by Perez Prado. I remember learning in class that this song was the #1 single for 10 weeks in 1955. That's crazy to me! But I believe it's because it's such a fun, lively, and cultural song.
Not gonna lie, this made me think of the movie "Nacho Libre," which I absolutely LOVE, and makes me laugh non-stop! It's a favorite in my family. The random vocals here and there in this piece are the best! I know that's what characterizes and classifies it as a mambo. I love how in the introduction, there is no hesitation to get the song started. The trumpets, the cowbell, drums, and shouting. They all make the beginning so fun and lively from the get-go. But during the "bridge" of the song, there actually are lyrics:
"Sí, sí, sí, yo quiero mambo, mambo" ... This translates to "Yes, yes, yes, I want mambo, mambo," and repeats 3 times. It's the "calm" part of the song, I'd say.
All in all, this is a fun, exciting song, and I quite enjoyed listening to and analyzing it for this weeks' blog.
This song is so fun! I feel like I hear it everywhere and it reminds me of so many things. I also think it's so cool that this song was #1 for so many weeks in a row, but I also find it very interesting because it's a different style. Either way it's a great song!
