This week for my blog post, I am choosing to write about Wild Cherry's song "Play That Funky Music." This song is such a fun song, first and foremost. From the very beginning, it's quite exciting, and makes you want to get up and get groovy, haha.
The lyrics are mostly about dancing and playing music. I looked up the meaning of it, and it was kind of a harsh one. It seems exciting to play music because it's fun, but the real meaning is that Wild Cherry was trying to produce music as much as they could, or else they'd not get paid enough or have enough business. "Club work was getting scarce if you didn't play dance music, so we decided to change. Someone actually did say that to us, 'Play that funky music white boy,' insinuating that if we didn't, we probably wouldn't be working much longer." Rob Parissi informs. This is a sad truth, because at this time, disco was super important to have as the main entertainment, and bands were constantly trying to top one another with new, top hits.
Putting that aside, this is quite a fun song, and reminds me of my mom and dad when we would swim in our backyard and blast 70's and 80's music and laugh and dance to it. It was always a great time.
Cool song! And I hadn't heard that story before that was super interesting. Also I gotta say, I really love the way this blog is set up. It's very appealing to the eye and easy to navigate. I think reading this post has given me two different courses of action. 1. I'm going to try and make my blog look as clean as yours, and I'm going to re-listen to the song with this new context you've given me. lol
ReplyDeleteI really liked your analysis! That was an interesting aspect of this song that I had never heard before. I think that it is sad that music has become such a commercialized thing and it is important to allow music creators the freedom to create music they genuinely care about rather than just what will sell.
